I have always been drawn to the natural world, particularly the oceans.
My earliest memory is living on Oahu, Hawaii where the ocean first became an integral part of my life. Surrounded by tropical forest, our house in Ahuimanu was at the base of rugged mountains that were perpetually shrouded in clouds. When it rained, dozens of waterfalls would magically appear. We moved back to the mainland where I spent family vacations in the back of a station wagon crisscrossing the country while camping and exploring the national parks.
A decade later, my love for the ocean was reignited while attending college at UC Santa Barbara. The beach again became central to my life. With my dorm room only a few hundred yards from the ocean, surfing and beach volleyball were daily pursuits. As I started surfing, I began to understand the nuances of the ocean — the hourly changes of the wind, the daily fluctuations of the tide, and the seasonal patterns of the swells. For the last 30 years, I have lived in Los Angeles within a few miles of the Pacific Ocean, where I continually find inspiration.
When I'm photographing in the early mornings if the light is just right, surf and sky merge and envelop me. The ocean’s energy runs through me like a life force as if I'm feeling the pulse of the planet. I live for these extraordinary moments because they profoundly connect me to the natural world, nurturing my soul and inspiring my photography.
I'm excited to share the amazing beauty that I encounter and hope that my images will inspire you.
